Take-out Inspired Easy Baked Orange Chicken Meatballs
If you love the bright, tangy-sweet flavor of take-out orange chicken but want something a little lighter, simpler, and more home-cook-friendly, these Take-out-Inspired Easy Baked Orange Chicken Meatballs are about to become a new favorite. They capture everything people crave about the classic dish—juicy chicken, a glossy citrusy sauce, and that irresistible balance of savory and sweet—but in a fun, gluten-free baked meatball form that’s perfect for busy weeknights, meal prep, or casual family dinners.
What makes this recipe especially appealing is how it delivers big flavor in an easy, doable way. Instead of frying, the meatballs are baked until tender and lightly golden, which keeps things easier and a little more wholesome without sacrificing taste. Then they’re tossed in a vibrant orange sauce that’s sticky, fragrant, and just the right amount of zippy. The result is a comforting dish that feels special enough for guests, but easy enough to make any day of the week.
These orange chicken meatballs are also wonderfully versatile. Serve them over steamed rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice, or pair them with roasted vegetables for a balanced meal. They also work beautifully as an appetizer for parties or potlucks, where they tend to disappear fast. With familiar take-out flavors and a straightforward method for making them, this recipe proves that you don’t need a wok or deep fryer to enjoy a restaurant-style dinner at home.
Whether you’re looking for a new family-friendly dinner idea or just a fresh way to enjoy orange chicken, these baked meatballs offer all the comfort and flavor of your favorite take-out order—made easier, lighter, and every bit as satisfying.
Make these meatballs big to serve over rice or with a side of steamed broccoli or cauliflower rice to keep your meal Whole30/Paleo, or heap alongside a skillet of fried rice for a hearty supper that even the kiddos will love. You can even make them as small as a savory snack or appetizer. However you serve them, these tender chicken meatballs are a healthier, fresher upgrade to classic orange chicken with all the deliciousness, and they’re gluten-free!
Baked Orange Chicken Meatballs are a Great Weeknight Go-to-Meal and a Healthier Option
Not getting “glutened” is always top of mind for me when eating out, and I think for anyone with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, but that’s not to say we don’t crave the signature flavors of iconic restaurant takeout.
One of those foods and personal guilty pleasures from before my diagnosis was take-out orange chicken. So instead of playing Russian roulette with the “can-I-trust-it” version, it became essential for me to find a recipe with rich flavors from garlic, ginger, soy sauce, orange, and spices that satisfied my cravings.
Honestly, this recipe fits those requirements perfectly. The bonus is how easy and quick it is to make, so it scores right up at the top of weeknight go-to meals, with only a little prep work required!
Because these meatballs bake, they’re a healthier option and cut down on both the calories and the mess of the favorite takeout fried version, without the breading.
Getting That Signature Taste
To get the signature taste, we finish these meatballs off by tossing them in an easy-to-make sweet-and-tangy glaze made with orange marmalade and a few on-hand pantry staples for a super easy, delicious, and quick dish.
The Secret Ingredient to Make the Incredible Sauce
We chose a jar of already prepared gluten-free orange marmalade from the store. Just be sure to read the ingredient labels to ensure the brand you choose doesn’t contain any wheat as a thickener.
Do You Prefer Zesty Orange Chicken Meatballs?
We’ve kept the sauce pretty mild for this recipe, but if you want to bump up the heat a bit, I suggest adding about ½ tablespoon of Sriracha during the simmer to kick it up a notch or two.
If you’ll be short on time later in the week, you can make them in advance.
This recipe works great for meal prepping!
Make the meatballs ahead of time and refrigerate them in an airtight container for 2-3 days. You can also make the sauce in advance for saucing the meatballs when reheating them. And everything freezes well too!
To freeze, transfer the cooled meatballs to an airtight container, vacuum-seal bags, or a freezer-safe zipper-top bag. Close, seal, and remove as much air as possible. Next, freeze the sauce in a small airtight container, leaving about ½ inch of headspace at the top. Both will freeze beautifully for up to two months.

Kitchen Notes
A fake-out for Take-out! Baked Orange Chicken Meatballs, loaded with fresh garlic, ginger, and scallions, then baked for a quick 15 minutes to seal in all that moisture and flavor. This recipe makes excellent, savory, sticky-and-sweet meatballs that can pull double-duty – in a nod to one of my once-favorite takeout guilty pleasures.
Footnotes:
[1] Making meatballs for a crowd or struggling to get uniform-sized meatballs? An easy trick we’ve found is to use a mini-muffin pan. Spray each mini-muffin cup with a small amount of high-heat cooking spray and scoop equal-sized portions of the chicken mixture into each cup. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the internal temperature of each meatball reaches 165°F (74°C). When using this method, you should end up with about 24 bite-sized, evenly proportioned meatballs.
